Don't you just love the songs from the old, old movies! George & Ira Gershwin were the creative force for many of these & it's coming up for George's birthday, so we're throwing GERSHWIN A BIRTHDAY PARTY! Beginning with champagne and birthday cake on the lawn we have such a treat for you with The New Empire Ragtime Ballroom Orchestra performing some of our favourite Gershwin pieces. Then sit back and be transfixed by the wonderful film RHAPSODY IN BLUE which chronicles George Gershwin's life. As he was fascinated with composing new kinds of music, the film is choc a block full of his music – Al Jolson sings 'Swanee," and there's Oscar Levant playing 'Rhapsody in Blue" and favourites such as 'An American in Paris', 'Embraceable You', 'I Got Rhythm', 'Somebody Loves Me' and oh so many more! Because the film was made only a few years after George's death, many of the people in the film are the actual people! Come along for an afternoon of bubbly and birthday cake, live music and this truly wonderful film!
