Mata, Missy and Makareta. Three cousins. Three lives. Separated by circumstances, bound together by blood. Orphaned Mata lives out her lonely childhood in fear & bewilderment under enforced guardianship.

Back home on the land, Makareta continues to search for her missing cousin. She leaves Missy as guardian of the land. As years pass, loss of the family land is imminent & the cousins’ promise to bring their stolen cousin home seems more unlikely than ever.

Based on Patricia Grace's decade-spanning novel following the fate of three Māori cousins in post WWll Aotearoa. The ensemble cast includes Rachel House and Tanea Heke.

‘Demonstrates the power, accessibility and relevance of cinema when it is made unapologetically culturally specific.’ (ABC)
